A Tragic Week For Geeks
Not only was this week bad for me personally, but Geekdom in general lost some pretty big icons in a short period. The first is Ricardo Montalbán and if you haven’t heard this news you must have been living under a rock. I really can’t say a whole lot more than what hasn’t been said already so I’m just going to show three instances where Montalbán touched my geeky life:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Of course I’m a hack that thinks that Wrath of Khan is the greatest Star Trek movie, so what? It rules.
Freakazoid
I loved Freakazoid and knowing that Montalbán was a part of it tickled me in ways I dare not mention here.
Naked Gun
One thing that Montalbán had going for him was that he didn’t take himself too seriously. He played an excellent straight man if there ever was one.
Now the other tragic geek loss might not have had the kind of spotlight on him as Montalbán, but he played a huge role in my development with his role as Number Six on the BBC series, The Prisoner. That man was Patrick McGoohan and I believe the best tribute to him can be found on the ISB. The Prisoner was an epic 60s show that must be seen to be appreciated. My discovery of The Prisoner was one of the seminal moments of my geek life.

It’s not hacky to assert that TWOK is the best of all Trek films. While I love all of the Original Crew movies … TWOK holds a special place in geekdom. For me it has to be the space battle, that was the first sci-fi movie to establish that space was a 3D environment. The battle between the Enterprise & Reliant was (and still is) fantastic.
