Childhood Trama: The Skyhawk
If there was one toy loss that sucked the most for me, it would have to be the loss of my original G.I. Joe Skyhawk. Now, I wrote before about how I lost the Soundwave I wanted so badly, but this one hurt a tad more only based purely on the circumstances.*
I don’t remember if it was something I had wanted for a long time or not, but I clearly remember being super excited at the store when I realized my Mom was actually buying it for me. I don’t know what it was exactly about this thing that I liked so much. I guess it might have been the fact that it was a neat mix of real life looking military hardware with a sci-fi bent. Since I was so obsessed with Star Wars, I was one of the kid’s that really dug the more outlandish concepts of the G.I. Joe universe, especially when they were easier to use with my older Star Wars figures.
When I finally got the thing home and put together, I don’t remember what exactly happened, but I remember getting involved in a wrestling match with my sister. And this wasn’t some super fun pretend match, it was more along the lines of a steel cage death match. At some point in our altercation, there was a crunching noise followed by my horrified screams at the site of my mangled Skyhawk. Yep, I had the toy for about a half a day before it was destroyed beyond saving.
My parents had a limited budget so we didn’t get a replacement, so for years I lamented the loss of the Skyhawk. It wasn’t a few years ago that I picked one up at a toy show in San Jose. The Skyhawk was incomplete, so I turned to eBay and bought one with all the necessary pieces for a decent price. Now that I have one, I can’t wait for the newer version to come out as well. It’s so weird how a random accident can turn into a weird obsession.
*If this tale seems familar somehow, it did appear in an issue of ToyFare as a blurb in a sidebar in a G.I. Joe retrospective. Not that anyone would notice, but I do feel a little guilty repeating myself.

Crap, thats sucktacular. Worst thing that happened during a fight with my little sister was she smashed me into the wall with a pillow and I chipped my front tooth. I was 10 at the time… I saw the dentist for the first time when i was 17.
