Dennis Quaid’s Big Ride
More and more stuff is leaking out as the G.I. Joe live action movie tie-in toys are being spotted. This last week saw this poorly photographed image of the product offering from the line:

There’s pics of what we’ve seen already, the standard roleplay items, and the obligatory Mr. Potato Head as a Joe. The thing that interests me the most is the huge Pit play set. It doesn’t seem to be getting very much loving from the collecting community and I’m not sure why. Is it the shape? Is it because it’s from the movie and not the U.S.S. Flagg? Further images have surfaced since the 2009 Toy Fair has kicked off and they’ve lead to even more arguing back and forth.

I’m not super excited by the thing, but it is an interesting addition to the line and nice to see a big vehicle finally come out for G.I. Joe. However, I wouldn’t be buying it even if I had the cash and the space for it. As nostalgia based collector I’d want something that was more along the lines of a classic vehicle. Hopefully, Hasbro will see enough sales on something like this and will be encouraged to return something like the Terrordrome. After all, in the realm of Star Wars fans could pick the newer AT-TE while Star Wars purists had the choice of the big Millennium Falcon.

Very Meh. One guy over at the ‘Tank said it looked like a houseboat on wheels with a tank stuck on top. I tend to agree with him, nothing about The Pit or the Movie Joe line sends me into a frenzy.

It looks awesome!
Its a vehicle and a playset, what’s not to love?

I will totally be buying it.

I’d rather just get a big Pit playset, sans silly vehicle mode…

I wonder if it’s got missile launching action?
(I’m not sure any real Joe would hang out in a playset like that. It looks a little top heavy.)

This will probably release around the time of my son’s 8th birthday. I will buy it for him. If I like it I may get another, but I will give full feedback on this whaen I have it in hand. I don’t have the MCC or Defiant. I am phasing out most of my 80’s stuff, I figure price will peek to sell of my guys around the time of the movie. I love the 25th style enough that I will probably get everything that is made for their foot pegs at least.
The 7 packs that will be coming out are a must for me. I hope that this big toy does sell so that we will get more of the old stuff, but this is a new generations GI JOE and I’m proud to be a good DAD and get it for my kid.

I’m not impressed with it. I’ll buy the Clone Turbo Tank instead. It’s Star Wars, but makes a much better Joe vehicle than this thing.

“It doesn’t seem to be getting very much loving from the collecting community and I’m not sure why. Is it the shape?”
Shape is a large part of it. It also completely violates any basic spacial laws in regards to what fans would define as “The Pit.”
The Pit is not a mobile unit. It has always been a hidden underground facility at a fixed location. One version of the Pit was large enough to house a Defiant.
“Is it because it’s from the movie and not the U.S.S. Flagg?”
I’m not even sure this toy will even remotely reflext the Pit that will be portrayed in the movie. Note the pics of the toy showing the bed and the storage lockers for example. They’re on the outside of the base (WTF???).
Whereas I usually like the idea of a playset that uses an “inside out” type of folding construction, the Pit is a contradiction of itself. Why? Because the wheels imply “outdoor” to a structure with indoor features. . .located on the outside.
My brain, she esplode.
