G.I. Joe: Catching up

by Paul

I’ve fallen a bit behind on my G.I. Joe news, so let’s catch up a bit. There’s two items that came out in the last week or so that are really worth noting if you are a Joe fan. The first is the reveal of Cobra Commander from the cartoon, G.I. Joe Resolute.

He’s nice and all, but I’m pretty burnt out on Cobra Commanders. To get me to buy one, he’s got to be pretty damn fancy. I’m talking hand stitched doily fancy.

The other Joe figures reveled this last week were two new five packs that I’m pretty sure nobody asked for or wanted:

The Cobra pack features some lazy repaints, but that chrome faced Viper is cooltastic. Again though, another Cobra commander? And what’s so different about Baroness and Storm Shadow to make me consider wanting them? At least Zartan comes with a bit of a color change to imitate what happens in the cartoon when sunlight hits him.

The five packs of Joes is slightly better only due to the fact that it includes the new body style of Snake Eyes V2 in his normal black color. I’m only slightly pissed that this looks like the only way to get new animal molds of Polly and Timber. I’m a sucker for Joes that come with animals and I feel I must own these variants for some reason I really can’t explain to a normal person.

I’m really looking forward to the joe 5-pack

  2. Great White Snark Says:

C’mon. A cape? That shit is fancy, Paul.

  3. Monte Says:

To be fair, these new sets will appeal to anyone who got into the series late.

And isn’t that Flint much improved over the original?

  4. LBAM Says:

Sucker that I am, I will totally be buying these 5 packs.

  5. Templar Says:

“Lazy repaints?” Okay, maybe Hawk and Cobra Commander, but Snake Eyes has been given his proper colours, Flint has a new headsculpt, webgear and shotgun, Stormshadow has an altered sculpt with bare arms instead of the earlier short-sleeved version, the Viper has new forearms to replace the “Viper hands” many complained about and Baroness, Shipwreck and Lady Jaye appear to be completely new figures.

  6. Paul Says:

Note to self: Keep up saying controversial things about G.I. Joe figures. You’ll get more comments.

  7. jumper11 Says:

When I saw the vac metal Viper, I said, “you had me at hello.” I am also a fan of the new Snake Eyes. I will be these packs for these two alone. The other repaints are okay enought to rationalize re-buying figures I have.

  8. D. Verburg Says:

I like the Zartan and will buy it for him because Zartan is swell, especially with color change

I like Shipwreck’s new head and arms but I think it will be tough for me to buy that

I assume this is HALL OF HEROES

    has anyone thought of that.

  9. D. Verburg Says:

also Monte Williams i keep trying to call you out, you are like ym arch-nemesis because you blog about gi joes from idaho JUST LIKE I DO but… it speaks volumes that you have not replied

    i…

    …YO JOE

  10. Shawn Says:

These look like two five-packs where I’ll buy them for a couple of the figures and sell off the rest on eBay.

  11. Shawn Says:

Oh, and all those Cobra Commander variants? I like to think that he is similar to Doctor Doom, where he has Doombot-like Cobra Commander-bots. But yeah, I’m getting really sick of a new one every month.

  12. hrdwrkngXsoldier Says:

There are a couple things I have to comment on.

1.) I assure you that these are in no way the Hall of Heroes. Remember that BAT was voted into the hall.

2.) One thing that shamefully is drawing me into the the cobra 5-pack is the staff that Cobra comander comes with. The others are the Zartan with the stormshadow mask and the silver colored viper gun.

3.) Like Paul i’m going to be forced to buy the Joe pack just for the animal retools Fortunately you get a Flint in this one too. I only had Tiger Force, so that is a treat to me.

4.) I hope the Ressolute line gives us more than just rehashes of all the same characters. I personally would like to see more rereleases of characters not done in the 25th style.

5.) I got my mega battle pack from target, and it is sweeeeeeeeeeet. I almost want to get another one just for the gunner, but i’ll probably just scoop some at a show or ebay, I don’t really need the additional pile of destros, CCs, Steelers, and short fuzes. I wish that It would have included some green shirts. The Crimson HISS is nice, but I had 2 classic ones all ready, and the blue Trouble Bubble just looks weird.
