Lego AT-AT in Action

The newest Lego At-At is a pretty cool looking set that comes with some nifty accessories. Another important selling point is that it is supposed to walk. Since I don’t plan on budgeting for this thing, a video of it in action will do lieu of building it and testing it out. The geek gadget blog Gizmondo comes to the rescue with their video of the Lego AT-AT in motion.
After watching this clip, I have to say it looks a little bit better than I thought it would. While AT-AT doesn’t move realistically in the least like it did in Empire Strikes Back, it doesn’t shuffle as badly as your average retirement home resident… just slightly better. Usually a “walking” feature such as this is a little less than impressive, but I believe Lego did a fairly decent job of getting at least a semi-realistic motion going if you lower your expectations a bit. As for that loud motorized grinding? I could do without that, but I realize there’s no way you can cover that up and replace it with the metallic stomping noises in The Empire Strikes Back. Hey, a man can dream can’t he? You know, I’d probably get Luke off his grappling hook while having the thing walk. It kind of made me a little motion sick thinking about being swung around like that. God, I have way too much empathy for small plastic figures.
The AT-AT is retailing right now for about 130.00 bucks. If this is something you must have, then all the power to you. I kind of liked the original that came with the Snowtrooper on a white Speederbike over the walking version, but maybe that’s just me.

If you get one of these, you HAVE to also get the new Hoth playset for the AT-AT to assault.
