Lego at Star Wars Celebration IV
Since a reader requested it, here’s my Lego Star Wars Celebration IV coverage. Oh yes, I do sometimes take requests.
I’ll be honest here. The Lego representation was a little… less than stellar. I’d seen Lego’s amazing booth and representation at Celebration II in Indianapolis and that blew IV’s Lego booth out of the water. There weren’t any sweet ass dioramas like they had at Celebration II, nor did they have nearly the amount of cool other Lego displays like a fifteen foot high Yoda.
There were only three Lego sets on display that I hadn’t seen before (but had known about since last January) and they were placed on a tiny ass table in the middle of their super busy booth. I give kudos to Lego for not putting them in a case so you could touch them, but they lose a few points for this too since it was impossible to take any pictures of them because of the throngs of kids swarming around it like ants on a dead bird. Yeah, you can’t blame the ants, but they are in the way of your sweet dead bird action. Wait a minute…
The Naboo fighter was there along with a droid Vulture fighter. I always enjoyed the design of the Naboo fighter and the Lego set does it justice.
Another cool starfighter to be released is the Jedi starfighter from Episode III, this time with it’s warp (calm down there fanboys!), I mean hyperspace ring.
The set I dug the most was the droid transport vehicle, which comes with 10 Battle droids and a Destroyer droid. It even features a movable droid storage rack that was just about the only cool thing in The Phantom Menace.
Apparently, the Republic Cruiser and Hoth Rebel base were on display. I didn’t see them anywhere. You can head on over to Brickshelf with this link and check out promo pictures of them if you haven’t seen pictures of them already.
The only exclusive they had for purchase was a plastic cube that contained a mini-Imperial throne room complete with Darth Vader, some Imperial Guards, and a couple of Stormtroopers. The cube cost about fifty bucks and there were only 500 of them there, so of course scalpers bought all of them. Good work, Lego.
Attendees did get the chance to win the metalized C-3PO (which you might find in packs of Legos later this year) or the giant ass Millennium Falcon. The Falcon was on display as well on Sunday. It looks exactly how it does on images found all over the web, so I didn’t bother taking a pic.
There were some life-size Lego models that had children buzzing around them like flies. Celebration IV saw the introduction of the live-sized C-3PO and he was there with his buddy R2-D2 and Chewbacca.
One of the strangest things about the booth to me was that instead of really showing off what Lego was all about to Star Wars fans like in Celebration II, it was basically a mini-Lego store with some extra stuff thrown in. There was tons of Star Wars Lego sets for sale and people were buying them like crazy. Why anyone would need to buy a Lego set at a convention that you can simply get at your local Target is beyond me. For this to be Lego’s answer to the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars is pretty disappointing and a little sad.

You’re right. I think they could have done a lot more/better.

Thanks for the pics! Yeah, it looks as if Lego really skimped out on this celebration. …Sucks. You would think that they would toss out at least a couple dioramas, seeing as though they inspire larger collections and thus better sales. btw, Your old lego / celebration pics are top notch.
Where’s the Life-Sized Lego Bikini Leia? …Or even a giant slave leia mini-fig! That would be SOOOOOOOO over the top!

I think I’ll grab the Droid transport vehicle just so I can build it and make a great youtube video of it rolling over a lego Jar Jar. …Lots of potential with that set.

Too bad they didn’t have any dioramas set up this year. The ones they had at Celebration II and III were really cool.

XeQUae, do you have any pics of the ones from III? I’d like to post them on the blog.
.
quincy, thanks for checking out the old pics. I took them long before I thought anyone else would look at them. I’m glad I could finally share. heh

That to-be-released Jedi ship looks like the ship from The Last Starfighter, doesn’t it?
Life-sized Lego Chewbacca = worth the price of admission to Celebration. Almost.

I posted a comment with links to my site for the Celebration III diorama, but I don’t see it showing up. I guess there must be some kind of spam filter blocking links or something. Anyway you can go to the site and then paste these onto the end of the URL:
