Lego January 2008 Catalog: Starrrrr Warrrrrs!!!

by Paul

The newest Lego catalog had lots of new items and while they can’t all be as excited as the Indiana Jones sets, they are still pretty kick ass. Let’s take a look at the newest Lego sets to make their appearance in the catalog.

TIE Crawler

This set wasn’t that new, in fact it was a Target exclusive, but this is the first time it’s been in the Lego catalog. I made my opinion known about this some time ago so there’s no need to go there again… except that while this is a nice Lego set, it is based upon one of the dumbest Expanded Universe vehicle ideas ever.

Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter

legowinter0010small.jpg

There’s not much here that is worth noting, except perhaps the Anakin looks pretty evil here.

AT-AP Walker

legowinter0009bsmall.jpg

The AT-PT Walker is one of the coolest vehicles from the prequel films, but it also had virtually no screen time. This Lego version looks like a good representation and it’s not too bad of a price.

Hailfire Dride & Spider Droid

legowinter0010bsmall.jpg

The droid tank and the Hailfire Droid are the only vehicles in the droid army I give a damn about. This one doesn’t look to bad. I’ have to toss the spider droid, though.

Rebel Scout Speeder and Imperial Dropship

Its cool to see that the Droids Battle Pack and the Clone Troopers Battle Pack opened the door for more army builder orientated sets. Out of the two sets, I’ve got to give it to the Rebels for having the better vehicle, but anyone buying the Imperial one is only doing it for the Stormtroopers so it makes pretty good sense.

Rogue Shadow

Oh where to begin on this? First of all, why in Hell can’t they design a ship that would look like it would actually fit into the Star Wars Universe at the time period when this little side adventure takes place. If you’re interested, this set included three mini-figs. There’s the unnamed Darth Vader’s Apprentice, the poorly named Juno Eclipse (is this fugging fan fiction? I mean really), and a super battle damaged Darth Vader. Whoops looks like that’s some sort of minor spoiler there. Want another spoiler? I bet the Apprentice dies at the end.

I can’t wait to check their new stuff out! I’m a life long Lego fan and this year’s stuff looks absolutely awesome!

I love how the dropship carries, like, two troopers.

A lot of the vehicles from the post-prequels era strike me as ridiculous and incredibly impractical. It seems like they all come from the “let’s give everything humongous wheels or feet” school of design. Where’s a basic, sturdy-looking Imperial Walker when you need one.

I’ve landed the AT-AP and the Hailfire Sites, thus far. Both are really nice display sets…

Something cool about the Hailfire droid is that those treads (wheels) are being held in place by transparent dishes. Nifty!

Paul: For quick Lego info to redistribute… Check out Eurobricks.com …They’re a good lego site / forum. Best I’ve found for news.

The droid army set is a MUST!
For $26 Canadian you get 2 standard battle droids, 1 commander droid, 1 super battle droid, spider droid, and a hailfire droid. Infact I recommend you get two of these… I dont know why you would toss the spider droid out though its awesome.

Compared to the other droid battle pack I would have to say there equal. Both battle packs bring a huge essence of the CIS in your lego collection with both you get a excellent amount of droids including super battle droids and vehicles.

Im also very glad that they put some super battle droids into these cheap sets. Before you could only get them in the republic gunship set which mine broke…
