Marvel Universe And Wolverine Origins Figures

by

It’s funny how things work out. After seeing the Marvel Universe and Wolverine Origins figures going for at least 12 bucks a pop at Wondercon (with Deadpool selling for $30), I wrote about it on this here blog. Last Best Angry Man said to just go to the store and pick them up. To show him up, I decided to go to the store to report back to say that there weren’t any. Low and behold, I walk down an aisle in Toys R Us and see associates filling up part of an endcap with the figures. A sort of mania overcame me then and it was all I could do to not buy all of them. I couldn’t escape without grabbing a few of them, so I’ve decided to share my thoughts now that I’ve had a chance to check them out. Remember, I don’t really do toy “reviews” so you’ll have to look else where for those (like here, here, here, and yes here).

Deadpool - Comic Book

Yeah, I have Deadpool. I understand if you’re jealous. Deadpool is hands down the best figure in these lines. He looks great and comes with the most accessories that I’ve gotten with any of these figures. The only minor complaint I have is with the sai. It’s almost as big as him. As an added bonus, he’s sure to make a swell G.I. Joe ninja.

Spider-Man

marveluniversespiderman

If I were a kid still and not the man-child I am today, I would have totally loved this Spider-Man. It’s got so much articulation that it does him perfect justice when wanting to create that perfect Spider-Man pose, something I always wanted in a Spider-Man figure when I was younger. One of the few downsides with this figure is that his one hand is permanently in a web shooting mode, though I guess that might be preferable to having two fists all the time. It’s times like this I wish these figures had interchangeable hands. The biggest problem I have with this figure is that he feels a little loose as well as fragile. I don’t know how long he would stand up to rigorous adventures that kids will undoubtedly put Spider-Man through.

Gambit - Comic Book

I really like this Gambit. He looks a little like David Bowie, so that makes him all the better. Hasbro did a really good job on the trench coat too, because I’m really happy they didn’t go with soft goods on this one. The most disappointing thing about this toy is that the staff that is made out of the softest plastic in existence. It looks ridiculous in his hands, because it will usually warp to a form that resembles more of a Fun Noodle than a menacing weapon. Gambit has a little less articulation due to his upper half being a thick coat, so his wrists don’t turn. It’s not that big of a deal, but it is noteworthy.

Wolverine - Comic Book - Yellow

Now this figure I actually picked up while I was at Wondercon, but I managed to get him on the last day when they were desperate to unload all their extras so he cost less than retail. There are at least two other versions of this figure. One is in his classic brown costume, which I also purchased but haven’t opened yet and the other is in the Marvel Universe line in his black and silver duds. They’re all basically the same figure, just different colors.

Anyway, to avoid having claws that might end up being bent oddly in this scale, Hasbro made them solid and painted the non-claw parts black and it works a lot better than expected. What’s disappointing is that I can’t for the life of me find a satisfying pose to save my life with this figure. It’s like his wrists aren’t positioned exactly right or something. Am I the only one with this problem? Also, I know he’s had clashes with ninjas, but does he really need a sword?

Silver Surfer

marveluniversesilversurfer

There’s not much to say about Silver Surfer except that he’s silver and has his trusty board. Oh yeah, it’s also nice to have a figure that could pretty much kick the ass of any of my other action figures past or present with perhaps the exception of Super Powers Darkseid (and yes, I’m including Superman). The only thing I don’t care for is that both his hands are open to make him better appear to be balancing on his board I guess, so there’s no punching or pretending he’s sending out power beams through his fists. Lame. Let me also say that it would be cool to have a version of this character that’s got a vac metal finish.

The Extras: Every Marvel Universe figure comes with a nifty fake manila envelope which contains some “secret” file type stuff on the hero the envelope is packaged with. It’s some cool stuff if your a kid or enjoy tiny, pretend manila envelopes like I do.

There is also a code that can be entered at www.furyfiles.com. If you start an “agent” account and enter the codes, you really don’t get much beside more memos from Nick Fury. Not very exciting.

I have the Captain America and Iron Man figures from the Fury Files line, and am dissappointed in how soft the plastic of the joints is, and how freely loose the limbs are. It’s a shame, because both scultps are fantastic, although Iron Man’s “power blast” thing is shit.

  2. Savage Says:

So how much did Deadpool cost you? I assume it was less than $30. It might be time for me to visit Toys R Us.

  3. doubledumbassonyou Says:

I’ve been hunting the MU figures to no avail. It seems that every stop I make I end up missing my two most wanted, Cap & Iron Fist. Very shortly they’ll be mine, I can feel it.

  4. Paul Says:

Savage: Deadpool retailed for 7.99 at my Toys R Us. Certainly overpriced for a figure it’s size, but damn I wanted it.

  5. The Articulated One Says:

Thanks for the shout out as one of many review sites, but after reading this post, I think these summaries do in fact qualify as reviews.

Shame on you Paul, reviewing toys with the rest of us bums, I really thought you were better than that.

On another note, I’ll have reviews of a lot of these up in the next week (or two) and you’re right about Spiderman, mine’s torso snapped in two !

Dude thats the price of a damn GI Joe, don’t give me that lip! I cut you mang!

He’s worth every penny. He’s the most damn solid figure in that scale.

  7. DrNightmare Says:

Hey, speak for yourself Paul, I would LOVE to get Fury’s manila all over my laptop.

  8. Paul Says:

Esbat, do you really think you should be paying 8 bucks for a figure of this size at retail? 3 34ths figures are way over priced these days. Just a year or so ago Joes only cost 5 to 6 bucks.

  9. DrNightmare Says:

    Preach it!

    I pay 12 bucks for 6 inch figures… and I paid… 8 for… less than 4… inch… *CRIES*

  12. Boone Says:

I had to take back my Marvel Un. Wolverine because one side of the joint at the knee wasnt even connected. I do agree the figures in this line are somewhat flimsy. But still they do look fantastic. For the life of me I still cant find a flame on Human Torch or Bullseye! No luck locating anything from wave 2 either. As for the Wolv. Origins I picked up Gambit and Deadpool and they are both great.

  13. yo go re Says:

One side not connected? You can fix that at home.

Does Silver Surfer shoot beams out of his fists? I guess I always just thought of him as gesturing with open hands…

  14. hrdwrkngXsoldier Says:

i have my 3 deadpools, well one is my sons. I love the figure, the sai (as any dp fan should know) is part of a joke, I remember the big sai from the comic plenty of times, they did overdue it just a bit. I do have some extra ice viper sai as well that are an easy substitue. I won’t be surpirsed if the electra figure comes with ice viper sai.
I haven’t seen any wave 2 yet, but i’m being picky with this line. The brown wolverine does have a different headsculpt than the blue and yellow so i passed because it looked like he was making a grumpy. I got the wepon x figure, but was disapointed when it arrived in the mail, the only picture I saw I didn’t see the face, so I will leave the helmet on. Gambit is cool, the maverick is okay, both the sabertooths suck though. I’m waiting for a lager one with the fury look.
I think these are great toys and was glad to get them. Flame on human torch and bulseye are both hard to find because they aren’t in every case, they alternate three of them in the cases (stealth iron man, flame on torch, and bullseye.)

  15. Jason Says:

i got deadpool, but the utility belt got undone very easily, and cant be re-done. it’s connected by a peg and a slot.
