Marvel’s Mail- Away: Nick Fury

The Marvel Universe figures all come with info from Marvel’s infamous character Nick Fury. But where is Nick Fury himself? Well, he’s the Mail-away figure for the line and Marvelous News got the scoop on how to get him. Instead of having to collect some sort of token like with G.I. Joe or Star Wars, there’s a special method if you want to get your hands on Mr. Fury. It looks like you’ll have to sign up for Marvel’s Digital Comic book service in order to get him. The service comes in two forms, $24.99 ($8.33 a month) for a 3 month subscription or $59.88 ($4.99 a month) for an annual subscription.
This seems like a good deal if you want to get the comics, but me not so much. I like Marvel comics and all, but overall I prefer real paper in my hands. There’s also the issue with me is that a lot of times I like the movie and cartoon versions of certain characters while I have barely read the comics. I also like the older incarnations of a lot of comic book heroes, like Iron Man or Captain America, and not so much the new versions.
If you’re collecting Marvel Universe figures, how do you feel about this? On the one hand you don’t have to buy a bunch of figures you might not want in order to get a bunch of arbitrary points, but on the other you have to buy a subscription you might otherwise not care about.

I would have rather collected POP and mailed away for him, but I’ll try the 3-month subscription. This makes sense for Marvel, but I’m not completely happy with their decision.

This seems like coercion to me…they should offer him for an exclusive price and then offer him separately as a free gift with a sub.

If you like older stories than this is PERFECT for you, Paul. The Marvel Digital Comics thinger has thousands of old issues available. I will probably sign up to get the figure, read a ton of comics, and then let it go once I get him. I’ll have plenty of time to read comics this summer.

what LBAM said: you know the movie and cartoon versions of the characters? Then get the three-month deal and read up on all those things for “free,” and see what you’ve been missing.
That said, I think this is a really underhanded screwjob my Marvel, but one that’s totally within their rights to do…

Here in Singapore, these are popping up in TRUs at the same rrp as the other figs.

Well, I guess I won’t be getting this figure. I think it is fine they want to promote their online comics, but they should have given other options for those not interested.

Yeah I’ll probably do the 3 month sub.

I’m probably in for 3 months, but I’m in no rush to get it done.
