Me Want Grimlock
About the only toy news to cause a big stir in the last couple of weeks is the revelation that Takara is going to make a Masterpiece Grimlock Transformer toy.
The Masterpiece series has already brought Transformers fans some really kick ass ‘bots, so the news that one of the coolest Transformers ever making it into the line-up is cause for celebration. The price is not. The price conversion equals about 130 bucks, that’s thirty dollars more than the previous Masterpiece figures, so hopefully it will be a pretty big robo-dino.
Personally, this is the first Transformer that has actually gotten me excited in quite some time. I’m a part, part time Transformers fan at best. I loved them when I was a kid and I like the general idea of Transformers, but I really don’t have the need to buy new Transformers or even collect the old ones so much. The few exceptions are the totally bad ass Transformers like those in the Masterpiece line that cash in on my nostalgia like some sort of crazy 80s love bank.
Grimlock is a character that I loved when I was a kid, mostly because I liked dinosaurs. I always found it funny that he was one of the few that almost never transformed out of his t-rex alt mode (along with the other Dinobots). Why would he, though? He was already super awesome. The only reason he’d ever need to change would be if he need to reach for something on a top shelf in a store or maybe to scratch his metal ass.
By the way, can anyone tell me why he has a waiter mode? Is it from the cartoons?

I was skeptical about a Masterpiece Grimlock when I first caught wind of it, but after seeing the prototype images I’m absolutely frothing to get this one. I have the 20th Anniversary MP Optimus and it is by far my favorite piece and the one thing in my nerd lair that generates the most comments. The price is meaningless to me, this will be mine.

He looks great, though he is probably beyond my funds. Grimlock was always one of my favorite Transformers as a kid along with Optimus Prime and Jetfire. So maybe I’ll find some way to squeeze him in…

go for it Paul, looks to be worth the dough, IMHO. You’ve had similar big purchases, so price shouldn’t be a factor.

I *think* the waiter thing was from the movie. It must have had *something* to do with Wheelie. Grimlock only ever acted that goofy around Wheelie.

It is great to finally see a new Takara Masterpiece figure that isn’t a plane! Geez. However Grimlock was never one of my favorite Transformers since he was more comic relief than anything, but just in terms of collectible-worthiness I’d like to see the final painted images and then decide.

Hmmm. I thought he was carrying a crown that I remember from an episode/comic book storyline. But the photo link does seem to make sense. I guess.

xeq: you should really make the room for Grimlock in your budget, even if it means starting to save now - the MAsterpiece toys are always spectacular, and definitely worth their price…
