MTV Gets the Scoop on the New G.I. Joe Movie

MTV.com recently ran a piece where they talked to Brian Goldner, one of the bigger slices of cheese at Hasbro. Since I have no real toy news to write about… I’ve got a run down of the article. but first let’s take a look at the opening paragraph:

Your grandparents remember a rah-rah line of 12-inch dolls with kung-fu grip, providing a male alternative to Barbie. Your older siblings (or, gasp!, parents) grew up with a highly stylized, action-packed, endearingly goofy cartoon franchise fueled by 3 3/4-inch action figures. You might recall anything from G.I. Joe Extreme to the Classic Collection, to pop-culture references like “knowing is half the battle.”

Okay I need an age check here… I grew up with “the endearingly goofy cartoon franchise fueled by 3 3/4-inch action figures”… and if I had children they wouldn’t be old enough to read, unless I had them very young and they probably wouldn’t be old enough to be interested in reading this article. G.I. Joe Extreme came out in 1996. If you were five when it came out you’d turn 17 this year and it’s hard to believe your parent could have possibly grown up with the A Real American Hero line. A Real American Hero lasted until 1994. Theoretically you could be 19 and still remember part of the original run of the 3.75 inchers. A Real American Hero celebrated it’s 25th Anniversary, not it’s 40th. Why do I keep droning on about this? Because I’m a geek who doesn’t want to feel old.

Anyway…. here’s what I got from the article…

- Larry Hama may have a cameo. Please let him be Tunnel Rat. PLEASE.

- The movie will tie in more with the comics than the cartoon.

- They will delve into Destro’s origin. I hope they answer how a Scottish Arms dealer sounds like a big black dude.

- The plot will be about the rise of Cobra Commander. It sounds to me that it will work out like an origin movie for a superhero… you know lots of build up and you only get to see the full on stuff late in the movie, with the sequel promising more.

- The toy line based on the movie will be 3.75 inch scale.

Yeah I’m 24 and grew up with the “the endearingly goofy cartoon franchise fueled by 3 3/4-inch action figures”. Damn, I feel young and good about it now to think about it!

But anyways, wondering if the movie figures will follow the same body sculpt as the 25th aniv? Should be right?

  2. Paul Says:

It probably will have the same types of bodies. That way they can swap parts and save money.

  3. Esbat Says:

    I remember the 3 3/4 line. 25 ;)
