My Little Pony 25 for 25
Sure the G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary was a big hit and the upcoming Transformers 25th Anniversary will most likely be a pretty big deal, but one of the biggest lines for Hasbro in the 80s is hardly getting any love. That line is My Little Pony. Hasbro is doing a little more about the anniversary by having a one night art show in New York City for fans to reflect on their favorite plastic ponies. The show will feature 25 My Little Pony figures “created” by such notable celebrities as David Arquette and Courteney Cox, Deborah “Debbie” Gibson, and LeAnn Rimes. And if you’re the biggest David Arquette fan in the world (that must be a tough competition for number one) and want to drop some cash, the ponies will be put up for auction that night.

MLP is the shit and I love ‘em. Brings back memories of when my cousin Dana and I would play MLP meets GIJoe. She’d let them hang in the Pony castle and drink tea. It was awesome. Then we’d all join the Pony alliance and fight Murky Dismal from Rainbow Brite.

It is kind of sad. He-Man, G.I.Joe, Transformers, Star Wars - they all got updates but girl toys from the 80s? Maybe Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears, but thats it.

lamartherevenger: I may be out on a limb here, but I’m betting that the number of women sitting around wistfully wishing for updated toys from their childhood are VASTLY outnumbered by the number of late-twenties, early to mid-thirties GUYS wishing the same. Which, of course, is why we are seeing the resurgences we are.

Yeah Stormsigma, that’s pretty much the reason.
It’s funny because at the toy show I went to, I remarked to my wife that there were so few girls toys to look at. We pretty much came to the same conclusion.

whoops my bad. never really thought of thing that way. I only hang out with one girl all the time anyway, my wife that is.

Heh, like you two, my wife sometimes chuckles at the lopsided attention given the “toyline resurgence/resurrection” industry. Right now, she’s currently keeping her fingers crossed for the…oh hell can’t remember, the guys doing the new He-Man figures to hold on their promise to get to the She-Ra characters in their update to the classic toyline. I myself may have to put my hands on the new He-Man when he comes available. Skeletor too. But after that, I’m done. I can’t get back into yet ANOTHER prolific toy-line. I am already fully in the clutches of the 25th Anniversary Joe line. I was collecting the Transformers Classic, but ultimately decided to sell ‘em to concentrate on the Joes with my limited (by my conscience) toy-buying funds.

Of all the words in that sentence, you chose “created” to get the ironic quotations? I’d lay my money on “celebrities.” Or maybe “notable”…

I think this just may be the perspective of your demographic on this blog. Hasbro went a little overboard with the MLP 25th anniversary as they started it over a year ago. There are been 4 sets of retro re-issues, a national convention and tours of the factory for MLP fans, panels with the original designers, and a ridiculous number of exclusive anniversary editions in addition to the second Pony Project (there was one last year as well).
I think girl toys and boy toys are just very different circles. I, for one, was thinking about how they were doing nothing for GI Joe and Transformers anniversaries until I saw your post so it’s just a matter of perspective.
