NECA’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

by Paul

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed blog The 5th Turtle revealed an image this last week of NECA’s take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

As you can see, Leonardo differs greatly from the Playmates Turtles that no doubt many of the readers of Toy Bender grew up with. That’s because he’s based on the original comic book appearance of the Turtles by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird that made them millionaires.

Reaction to this photo on the internets message boards seems to be extremely positive, so I’m going to go on an official unpopular stance by saying that while this is cool and all, Leonardo is a little more dumpy than I thought he’d be. I thought he’d be a little more streamlined like in this photo:

I can certainly understand why Playmates had changed the look of the Turtles way back in the day to make them more kid friendly. Don’t get me wrong, I like this Leonardo and NECA’s take is dead spot on to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s just that this is one figure that really isn’t for me. My fiancee also just asked me if he was a cake, because he has the look of fondant. I couldn’t agree more and now I’m hungry for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cake.

For the record, Cornboy (of the Four Horsemen) wrote on Toymania’s ToyBuzz forum that these were not the final paint apps. And paint apps on prototypes often have that “fondant” look–don’t forget that the final figure will almost certainly have the green parts molded in plastic.

As for the design–personally, I’m more than happy. He looks just like the first comic, which is what I wanted. The more streamlined, later Turtles are cool too, and something we might get down the line–but I’m really glad that first up we’re getting these dead-on likeness from TMNT #1.

…is there a face in that turtle’s neck?

All respect to the 5th Turtle and all, but for the record, the sculpt was shown off in Previews first. Maybe they were given an internet exclusive on the premiere, but the info was still available in the big book for anyone who flipped to the back.

And that face in his throat? It’s because he just ate a man and his skin is thin enough that you can see the guy’s carcass sliding down Leo’s esophagus. The old turtles were VICIOUS!

    ah, crap. me=dumb…

  5. Monte Says:

What’s the articulation gonna be like on these? And how tall will they be?

I’m still high off the TMNT movie…

  6. yo go re Says:

well, you can see a bunch of the articulation in the photo, there - balljointed shoulders, swivel biceps, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, balljointed hips, swivel thighs, hinged knees and hinged ankles. The neck seems to be a swivel, but I wouldn’t be surprised it there was a balljoint for the head, as well. Basically, it looks like everything you’d want, except maybe a waist.

Personally, I’m hoping these will be 5″ figures - then they’d be in perfect scale with ToyBiz’s Legendary Heroes. My gut says they’ll be 7″, though…

  7. Great White Snark Says:

    C’mon. That’s totally a cake.

  8. Poe Ghostal Says:

    @yo go re–

Well, let’s face it, the “real” Ninja Turtles probably couldn’t turn at the waist either, what with the shell and all.

As for the scale…I too would love 5″ Turtles, but you’re almost certainly right, yo, they’ll be 6″ tall (7″ scale). However, there is some hope since each Turtle is coming with an elaborate base–maybe that’s making up for a smaller size.

  9. Monte Says:

Hmm… if they’re taller, they’d be to scale with my Sigmas…

I’m thinking they’ll be tiny, for some reason.

  10. yo go re Says:

no, I meant they’d be a full 7″ tall - an 8″ scale or so. And yes, that’s why I didn’t guess that there’d be a waist hidden in the blackbelt: there SHOULDN’T be.

    Bases, you say? Intriguing!

  11. Paul Says:

I think I have a new post idea, I say one thing and you guys talk about it. heh

I’m hopinhg this line does well and we see original versions of Shredder, Casey Jones, Triceratons, and Krangs (yes there is more than one Krang).

  14. Paul Says:

Hey Jackass, you can knock me but lay off my fiancee. She was joking.
