Toy Fair 2007: News In Brief (continued!)

Let’s Transform and roll out the toy news.
Marvel
It looks like Spiderman is joining the ranks with Star Wars and Transformers in the trend of becoming a Mr. Potatohead. Spiderman is now Spider-Spud.
HeroScape, the game that lets you play a miniatures battle with teams made of Zombies, robots, Revolutionary War soldiers, and Vikings, ninjas, and the list goes on, is now adding Marvel heroes to its roster. Man, this is becoming the game to get if you’re a nerd.
Can’t get enough cute Superhero Squad action? Who can’t? Check out this link for a few pics of new heroes.
DC
Mattel’s new corporate strategy? Rip off Hasbro. Two new Mattel DC superhero lines are startling similar to two Hasbro Marvel properties. First up is DC Super Friends, which falls into the Spiderman and Friends cutesy figure category. The other is Battleague, a game that reminds me of Hasbro’s Attackix. Good work R&D team.
G.I. Joe
The G.I. Joe line has come out swinging, and I’d almost swear they’re on the juice. Feast your eyes on dozens of pics of the new figures due to come out. And yes, that is a 13″ inch mech that fits any Sigma Six figure. My mind has been blown.
Oh wait, you thought that was it? There’s more awesome left for G.I. Joe news in the 25th Anniversary department. The new Real American Hero figures (reported on here and here by yours truly) will have cards that look just like the old 80s Joes complete with file cards on the back. The old O-rings might be gone, but the new Joes will sport articulation similar to that of the super articulated clone troopers. Finally, some sets will have a sound chip that will play the G.I. Joe theme song.
Star Wars
Not to be outdone, Star Wars has some nice additions to the ongoing Star Wars toy lines. Galactic Heroes fans should be happy with figures like a cute and cool Leia as Boushh with an adorable Han Solo in carbonite. There’s even a sweet Jedi knight Luke, and an even sweeter General Kenobi in his clone armor.
Hasbro has finally broken its streak of only releasing repaint and re-release vehicles with the likes of the V-Wing and Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator.
Misc.
Toynami has got some really exciting stuff in the works. First there’s some great looking Robotech stuff. There’s some new Masterpiece Edition items coming out and while I’m not really into the transforming motorcycle thing, I got to admit they look awesome.
For you Futurama fans, it looks like Bender is going to be in assortment three. So stop worrying your crass robot loving heads off.
