Playmates Gets Terminator and Star Trek
Playmates announced this week that they acquired the toy rights to the upcoming Star Trek film due out in May of 2009. This shouldn’t be all that big of a surprise considering Playmates had the licenses for years before Star Trek pretty much ran out of steam with the general public.
In a more surprising move, Playmates also announced that they acquired the rights to make action figures based on the new Terminator film, Terminator Salvation.
From the press releases, Playmates is looking to make multiple scale figures for Terminator and I’m guessing the same for Star Trek. The only question here is how good they’ll look. I was never a fan of the original Playmates Star Trek figures. They didn’t look realistic enough for me. The line had an amazing assortment of figures, but I couldn’t quite get over the look of them. From what I’m getting in the press releases, they are pretty much copying the Hasbro model of toy making right down to the play helmets and fists, so I’m thinking that the styling of these figures will at least attempt to match the modern, more realistic take that are found in toy aisles today.
Anyone here looking forward to either of these toy lines? If the economy doesn’t completely crumble and I’ve got a few extra bucks, I just might pick up a few Star Trek figures and if the Terminator line is good I could foresee really getting into that. I love me some Terminator.

It’s actually Ter-me-Nader, coz he gonna cleeeeeeen up the election! Am I right?! Yup, nope. I still hold a grudge against playmates for blowing WildC.A.T.s (not that it was grea) and Savage Dragon, but hell who could argue with more endoskeletons and an articulated Christian Bale action figure- for those inclined, you could act out man crushes!
That’s right no one! Bruce Wayne for president!

Me. I’d be more interested if they were making Sarah Conner Chronicles figures. Yay for Christian Bale and all, but Terminator Salvation is about as low on the Must-See List as, well, a new Star Trek movie…
