Starbuck? More Like… Star YUCK! Lolz!

by Paul

It’s been awhile since I’ve covered anything Battlestar Galactica, but to be honest I haven’t liked a lot of the toy offerings. I’m not a big Minimates guy, and I’m not a huge fan of the highly non-posable figures due out from Diamond Select. I also feel that Battlestar Galactica as a series went completely off the rails during season three so I’m a little less than apt to report on BSG toy news. Who knows, maybe Razor will bring me back to the BSG fold. Anyway, I recently ran across an ad in Previews for these new figures that I found quite disturbing:

That Cylon in the middle looks great, but what the frak is up with Starbuck on the left?

Just look at her mutant monkey face:

That does not look like Katee Sackhoff. Katee Sackhoff looks like this:

…wait okay maybe they do look kind of alike, but there’s just something about that facial sculpt that bothers me on an instinctual level. I’m getting a primitive reaction that something is not right and I must either choose fight of flight. It’s like one of those horror stories where the difference in something is so subtle as to not make you feel in danger, but rather to make you feel wholly uncomfortable. It’s not as bad as the terrible Wonderwoman figure I saw in Previews awhile back, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Am I out of line here? I normally am not too critical of facial sculpts, rather I leave that to the professionals. Still, this Starbuck looks like garbage.

It’s the mouth and jawline. Try covering them on the figure with your hand. It looks much better that way.

I think I just crapped myself. That makes two OAFE writers that have left a comment here. Awesome. Anyway, you are right. Thanks for pointing it out PG.

  3. Margie Says:

I agree that the problem is the mouth … it has a stretched, plastic surgery look that is just creepy.

  4. Great White Snark Says:

It looks like the lovechild of Katee Sackoff and Gareth from the UK version of The Office.

I, also, am hoping that Razor brings me back into the fold.

    Yeah, Poe’s totally a joiner.

Glad to see someone else agrees with what we said in this month’s Flippin’ Through Previews: that Starbuck’s just no good.

The main problem is that her mouth is too low. It’s too far away from her nose and too close to her chin. Yeah, it’s a little bit too wide, but that wouldn’t be quite as noticeable if everything else was right. Her head should be slightly wider at the top, too…

[...] at Toy Bender has a preview of the new Battlestar Galactica toys, including this rather disturbing one of Starbuck that Paul has described as having a “monkey face.&#8221… Personally I think it is the lips that are the problem, they look like Katee crossed with a Joan [...]

  7. rev1 Says:

I too must add my two cents — the mouth is all frakked up. Too wide, too low, giving her a dinky, weak chin, and weirdly far from her nose. Also, too much cheek grooving. The eyes though, and upper nose are pretty good for a toy.
