TAtTF: Indiana Jones and the Vintage Toys

Indiana Jones has never gotten the toy success like other movie hits like Star Wars. While Hasbro is making up for lost ground with its Indiana Jones toy line, but way back in the 80s Kenner had a short lived Jones line followed by an even shorter lived line from LJN. Here’s an amazingly well preserved television commercial for the old 3 3/4″ figures from Kenner:

There’s not much to say about these commercials, except that maybe that I don’t ever remember seeing either commercial or any of the figures in a store when I was growing up. I know I was pretty young when the film came out, but I’m pretty damn sure I would have wanted a figure if I’d seen one. Then again, I didn’t get to see the film until I was a little bit older because of the whole melting faces scene at the end. My parents were pretty protective of the violence and nudity I saw as a kid. I guess that’s why I’m the violent pervert I am today.

I fully expected Indy to melt Toht’s face at the end of the first commercial.
Disappointment.

Yeah, it’s hard to see Toht in any form and not expect his face to melt.

I remember those 3 3/4 inch figures, and even the commercial for the larger one. I know we (meaning me and my brother) had Indy, the Cairo Swordsman, and Toht….did they ever make any other 3 3/4 Indy figures back then, or were those three it?

Addendum: I know there was a mail-in of a figure with the staff of Ra….was it Indy or Belloq in the gear, though? I can’t remember.
