The Hunt: Toys R Us Exclusive Soundwave

by Paul

Way back in the annals of Toy Bender, I geeked out over a classic version of the Transformer Soundwave reissue that I’ve been waiting for years to get made. After several delays, the elusive Transformer from my childhood is finally mine.

soundwave00001.jpg

This guy seems to be pretty hard to find, which makes sense considering he’s one of the most popular G1 Transformers and awesome to the max. The packaging here is simply fantastic. While the new found joy of opening toys wants me to bust Soundwave loose, I may just leave him in the box for awhile before making such a rash decision.

Now if you don’t hate me already for not opening all my toys, you might hate me after I make this next admission. I was not a good toy collector when I got this guy. There wasn’t just one Soundwave at my local Toys ‘R Us, there were three and I bought all of them. Now before you get out your pitchforks, I’m not scalping two and keeping one for myself. One was meant for me, one I picked up for my roommate (we toy collecting types watch each others backs), while the third was for possibly selling via eBay.

So my question to you loyal Toy Bender readers is thus: If I try selling this third Soundwave on eBay, does this make me a dirty, horrible toy scalping jerk? I want to hear from you. Tell me I’m rotten or that you do this yourself. Your arguments could determine the future of the third Soundwave!

    Paul,

Congrats on getting one of those toys you really wanted! I know the feeling all too well. Selling the extra doesn’t make you a jerk. Take it from one who knows. It’s a way of supporting your toy habit. There are people out there who’d rather buy off ebay than go roaming the stores looking for their toys!

  2. Elisa Says:

Well…I used to work at Toys R Us (which is the best way to get any toy, BTW..no discount, but you get first dibs) and I’d say that you are only an evil toy scalper if you do that all the time. You should see the folks that are there every day right at the second the store opens…

  3. Paul Says:

Thanks ladies that’s 2 to 0 so far. Elisa, I’ve seen those people at Walmart when I worked there.

The only times I’ve sold things like this online (that I can remember) is when I’ve kept one for myself. I’d still like to hear a differing opinion on this one though…

  4. kevin Says:

Please sell the extra to me!

I’ve looked everywhere for this thing. I called 2 stores a week ago and they had 8 at each, but they were in the back. I called back and now they have 0. So someone got them all in one week…I’m guessing an employee with an ebay account.

Anyway if can help me out send me an email!

  5. Paul Says:

This is a mighty strange twist! Thanks for stopping by! I’ll contact you unless I get more people checking in on this issue.

Paul, so that you can recieve the maximum amount of Karma for minimum guilt, you should just give it to me. I’d hate for you to tirture yourself over this decision and by giving it to me, you’d be making a recently divorce father of three very happy (nice tug on the heartstrings don’t ya think). Do the right thing brotha. ;)

  8. Paul Says:

Keith your enormous sob story is almost working for me. The problem is I have an extra 30 some bucks on my already enormous credit card balance. I can’t just give this stuff away. Now if you convinced the boys at 451 Press to pay me for this toy, then I might be able to put it up as a contest item and you may somehow have the chance to win it… but that won’t happen.

With extreme prejudice! I’ll get a sack of doorknobs. This is an awesome toy though. I tried to get one at Toys R Us…they pretty much directed me to eBay.

  13. Paul Says:

Yeah, I was very lucky to find mine. I’ve been looking at them on eBay and they don’t seem to be going for much more than retail. You might want to give that a shot.

    Bah!….oh okay.
