The New Playmates Star Trek Figures… Now with Less Ass
Playmates released images and details on their new Star Trek figures and I’ve got to admit, amazingly some of them don’t look like total crap!

Still, there are plenty that still look like balls like poor old Chekhov here:

Barf.
It’s almost unbelievable that the Playmates Star Trek line is going to have more figures and even some larger sized monsters, because it never seemed like the stores that I went to were in any danger of running out of them. I thought the line was another Indiana Jones (sigh!) and that the first run was all that we were going to see. I guess the fact that the film was a runaway hit might have helped things out a bit.
Oh yeah, I forget. This thing bothers me a lot:

First of all it irritated the shit out of me in the movie because it was involved with one of those stupid scenes where a bigger monster defeats the first big monster to prove the hero is really in danger (thanks George Lucas). It also follows the rule where, for some reason, any large monster in movies now has to roar and have air and spittle flying out of it’s impossibly large mouth. I also couldn’t help wondering how this thing stays alive in a frozen environment, when it has no fur or blubber to keep it warm. Yes, I’m a huge nerd.
This toy bothers me a bit because the head is in full on scream mode. I’m a weirdo and would like to have a more middle ground pose in my toys. Less roaring and more menacing, I say. I also think the lack of detailing makes it look more like it belongs in some sort of Star Trek animated line.

I keep hoping they will pull an Indiana Jones and make figures from older material.
On the other hand, the line looks to be an abysmal failure. They are everywhere here.

How big is that red monster?
I sense a photo opportunity…

Still haven’t seen this movie yet, a bit scared of it since Peter Laird ripped it to shreds, but I’ll check it out soon enough.
I still love all the accessories that come with the Star Trek toys, but I’ve yet to plunk down any money on them yet. The 3 3/4 line may eventually work it’s way into my home, but it’s debatable.
I like the weird looking Furby chef guy. At least, that’s what I think he is.

Is it just me or is that Uhura figure kinda sexy?

Peter Laird the TMNT guy? Who gives a good goddamn what he thinks? The movie is superb.
My major problem with the monster was the simple fact that it’s red. In a polar environment? What sense does that make?
