The Slightly Star Wars Wedding Cake
I’d promised this before and here it is after a slight delay, a couple of the nerdy (and toy related) things having to do with my recent wedding for you to either think it’s cool or to use as fuel to mock me.
UPDATE: You can find wedding pics here. I’m always updating them, so if you are really interested in my life then check them out.

As you can see in the foreground there is a Grooms Cake that is being protected by an assortment of figures including a couple of clone troopers, Chewbacca, and C-3PO. The Grooms Cake was not crazy and shaped like R2-D2 or anything, but it was insanely delicious. This was because it was a German Chocolate cake, which we all know to be genetically superior to all other cakes.

And here’s the cake topper featuring Han Solo and Princess Leia:

In case you are curious about the making of the topper read on, otherwise skip this paragraph. Diane (the wife) said we should have a Han and Leia wedding cake topper as we are both nerds (different types, but nerds who both enjoy Star Wars still the same). Since I had a surprising amount of figures open from the last few decades of Star Wars toys, I had her select from amongst them. She settled on a Bespin Han who ironically comes with manacles that you can use to bind his hands for an appropriate commentary on marriage. I believe her choice on that particular Han was based on the fact that she liked his jacket. Anyway, out of the Princess Leia figures that I had open none of them were really that great and she refused to have a Slave Leia on her wedding cake. I offered up one of my mint on card Princess Leia figures from Kenner’s Pricess Leia Collection instead. In case you don’t know what that is, the Princess Leia Collection consisted of a series of four two packs, each containing Leia and another appropriate figure like Luke or Han. What was special about them was that the Leias had a mixture of real cloth and plastic for clothing along with realistic hair braids to offer some of the most elegant of the 3 3/4th Leias. I took one down off my wall and opened it up in the name of the wedding. Let me tell you though, that was a bit rough as an ex-diehard MOC collector. I then hot glued the figures to a chunk of a cutting board my dad cut for me. I also added some fake flowers and greenery I culled from some fake plants I purchased at the local Wal-Mart.
Now that those boring details are out of the way, the next item is an R2-D2 gift card holder, which stood about about two and a half feet tall.

This guy was made by one of Diane’s friends named Kelly with a mixing bowl for the dome, a pickle barrel for a body, and some various metal parts her father found at his workplace. What really sells this for me is that he carries the value of a homemade present as well as the fact he was appropriately dressed for the occasion in a tuxedo.
Well there you have it. Aside from a bunch of Stormtroopers that were guarding our guest book (no pictures, sorry) our wedding was otherwise 85% “normal”. If you’ve got any pictures you’d like to share of your nerdy wedding accessories, please let me know!

I really dig your cake topper, Paul. Our wedding gifts to my Husband’s attendants were the leaf broaches from LOTR. Also, the blessing spoken by the Best Man came from Babylon 5. Have I ever mentioned that my Hen Night was at BayCon?

I love the nerd touches to the wedding!
Also, I’m glad you explained what kind of cake that was. I thought it might be a ice cream cake with a cookie cake on top. That would probably be good, too.

You and I both know there’s nothing “crazy” about an R2-D2 cake.
Brave deed, giving up your Leia collector’s piece for the sake of the wedding cake. That’s love.

Hen night?
For that matter, Groom’s cake?
I took one down off my wall and opened it up in the name of the wedding. Let me tell you though, that was a bit rough as an ex-diehard MOC collector.
MU-HU-HA-HA-HA!
I think I have a picture somewhere of my cake topper - Lego people on a little terrace thing…

PS: GWS, that “sacrifice” would probably be harder to take if he couldn’t replace the set for about a dollar (plus shipping) on eBay. Still, it’s the thought that counts…

My wife did this yoda cake - I’m not sure if it was for a wedding, but I really love it:

For my wedding we picked out a cake topper, but when I got to the Reception I found it had been replaced by this:

My 2 sister-in-laws were responsible for this. Now, I don’t know why they have Han holding a gun and pointing it at a chained slave Leia, but at least they don’t have Luke up there.
They also had Darth Potato Head and Ms. Potato Head on our table:

Thanks for the comments everyone!
@yo go re: I’m not sure what a Grooms Cake is for as I’d only ever read about them on Great White Snark’s site when he posts about nerdy cakes. Somehow I ended up with one. I’m not going to complain though, it was more cake.
Also, yeah the set isn’t worth anything, but the fact that I had it hanging on that wall untouched for eleven years. I did tell her that if it HAD been worth a fortune she’d have to deal. heh
Jesse: Nice cake!
xequae: That pic of Han holding up Leia is freaking hilarious.

I will have to share some pictures from my own wedding next weekend, I’m not sure of all the details, but the wifey is supposed to be doing something cleaver for the grooms cake.

@yo go re:Hen Night
That would be a Bachelorette Party.

Everything looks awesome, Paul. Hooray for geeks! Besides, I’m sure the number of geeky weddings aren’t even close to the number of football weddings.
As for Mrs. Ghostal-to-Be and me, not only will we have Fry and Leela as our wedding toppers, but each table is going to have an action figure centerpiece. So far I’ve got Batman, Spider-Man, and a NECA Leonardo…

dibs!
Elisa: I wasn’t questioning what a hen night IS so much as I was questioning where you get your strange lingo from. Were you born in the early 19th century?

Would you please HURRY UP AND UPDATE YOUR DAMN BLOG ON A MORE CONSISTENT BASIS?!?!?!
…by which I mean, “Hey, man! Congratulations on getting married!”

Congratulations on your wedding. Nice cake and great pics. If you’re going to do a GIJoe/Cobra theme cake, who would be the best couple? I’m thinking Destro / Baroness or Flint / Lady Jaye.
June 2nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
CG76: I’d got with Flint/Lady Jaye, because I guess I’d need good guys for the wedding. You could also do Snake Eyes/Scarlet OR Duke/Scarlet if you were a fan of the cartoons. But my pick would have to be Flint/Lady Jaye.
I think the perfect combo would be Road Block with a big Snake hanging around his shoulders though…

because after marriage, all you can do is mutter “I wassss onccccce a man…”?
June 2nd, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Well that and I thought they made a cute couple.

Well, I had heard rumors that you were recently married. As I was told by a southern gentleman, a groom’s cake was originated in the south and was “spiked”, especially in dry counties. Congratulations and I’m sure your parents are proud of you and their new daughter-in-law.
