The Star Trek Movie Toys Are Still Ugly
I was checking out Raving Toy Maniac and I saw some pictures of Star Trek figures I hadn’t for some reason seen yet. First let’s watch some crazy extreme Star Trek action before we look at the crap:
Woah! EXTREME TO THE MAX!11 STAR TREK IS HARDCORE 4 LIFE!!! As much as I want to bag on the new Star Trek, I think this film is going a long way to try to appeal to the non-super geeky Star Trek crowd. In order to regain a lot of it’s lost momentum I believe that Star Trek has to be found at least some mainstream acceptance again. Sure Star Trek was never really “cool,” but a television series or movie can’t just survive on the faithful alone. You need to engage a bigger audience to help lift up a franchise.
Enough of my ramblings. Let’s get back to the toy action:

Like I said, I had missed this group shot of the movie cast in 4 inch form until tonight. With a couple of exceptions, I don’t find these figures very appealing. The crotches on the figures are a real detriment to the aesthetics. They look like they belong on figures from the ’80s, not figures of today. That Captain Kirk head looks a little too skinny as well, like he’s got a pin head.
The real standout in this picture is the chair. Yeah, that chair looks real nice.

Shortly before The Phantom Menace came out, I remember reading an article in a newspaper about how Star Wars fans could still be “cool,” whereas Star Trek fans were stereotyped as basement-dwelling nerds.
Then came the prequels. That Conan O’Brien video of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog tearing into a line of fans waiting to see Attack of the Clones pretty much sealed the fate of Star Wars fans. The fan dressed up as a Vulcan flipping them off was just salt in the wound.
I think SW fans have more or less lost their leg up on Star Trek fans in terms of coolness. In fact, I imagine there’s a degree to which liking Star Trek could be viewed as ironically cool by hipsters or whatever.
Those toys are still…not good, though.

Good points Poe, but I do think that the Clone Wars TV series is helping a bit if not for the fact that it’s recruiting thousands of kids into the whole Star Wars thing. Star Trek really hasn’t had a lot there to attract new fans in a long time.

i think Star Trek is rad and am pretty excited for the movie. I hope Pike and Kirk are rival captains and Kirk is always just one step ahead and Pike is like “DAMN YOU KIRRRRK” because Kirk gets there earlier to bag the hot green-painted woman before he can
Star Wars is pretty rad, too. the new clone wars is way better than I thought it was going to be
I like that Playmates is doing Star Trek again– and maybe I hope the movie will be bad so it will sour the hipsters and they’ll throw away their Star Trek the animated series lunchboxes and use their trustfunds to buy guns and shoot themselves??

Dude, where is my Simon Pegg as Scotty? I can see a Chris Pine as Kirk and a Zachary Quinto as a Spock but where the F*** is my Shaun of the Trek?
