To Boldly Kind of Go
There’s been a lot of buzz about the upcoming lines of Star Trek toys, hell USA Today had a story on them. Freaking USA Today! Unfortunatly not all of the buzz is good. In fact, the stuff from Playmates has been getting slammed for looking not so hot:

It was feared that Playmates wouldn’t have the experience to put out a product of the kind of caliber seen in other toy companies that are used to making toys for collectors with high standards. So far those fears look to be correct. The Terminator Salvation figures revealed by the company looked decent, but weren’t up to the current toy standards collectors expect and get from many other toy companies.

The 4 inch scale figures don’t look as bad as the larger scale ones, but G.I. Joe 25th or Star Wars level they are not. Still, it’s cool to see a 4 inch scale bridge in one of the few appearances of Star Trek in this scale. Personally, I’m praying that they’ll release a bridge based on the original series or The Next Generation so I can just load it full of Star Wars figures. Oh yeah, I’m that guy.

It’s both interesting and funny to note that (as Topless Robot points out) the Barbie Star Trek figures from Mattel look a lot better than the Playmates toys.

Great job Mattel.

Yeah, those playmate figs are kind of disappointing. Thankfully I’m not any kind of a Trek fan in the first place, really, though I will be going to see the movie.
In other news, I can’t get the ‘contact’ thingie on this blog to work…but I have a certain Infinite Heroes figure to ship you. Drop me an email.

God I miss my Playmates Galileo Shuttle Craft. That was one bad ass ship, with the light up nacelles, and opening rear hatch. That slowly became requistioned by my GI Joes, who in their Star Brigade phase needed a vehicle that was up to snuff ….
Yeah this new Playmates stuff doesn’t thrill me. If I pick up anything from this line it will be the new Enterprise.

Playmates “action” figures have always been the worst. The new 4″ figures look really bad. And the new uniforms should not look like heavy sweaters. Yeesh.

I’m afraid seeing the movie will make me want toys. And then my only option will be these ghastly little lumps. Who do I blame for this?

“Who do I blame for this?” I’d put the blame on whatever causes your obsessive need to buy toys even if those toys suck. It’s the same problem I have with DC Infinite Heroes.

Hey, I managed to steer clear of the Spider-Man 3 toys entirely, just like I recommended everyone else do. So it’s not ALWAYS obsessive…
