Toy Ads that Time Forgot: Grab Your Banana, It’s Go Time

Man it’s been a long time since I did a Toy Ads that Time Forgot with a comic book ad, unfortunately most of my good ads dried up. This was an old one that I found laying around that I realized that I must share with the world (click on it to make it much bigger):

These kids are really excited about bananas. I can’t blame them either. I love bananas. I can’t count how many times my banana has saved me from a sticky situation. In fact, when life has got me down and I don’t think anyone even knows my name, I still have my trusty banana by my side… to fight aliens… yeah. You have to hand it to Chiquita here for coming up with a half-way decent giveaway for kids. I’m pretty sure that kids now wouldn’t give a crap about these kinds of things now, what with their Iphones and their electric guitars. I remember growing up and thinking a walkie-talkie was the on of the coolest things ever aside from one of those microphones that let you talk on a radio. Sure your average kid walkie-talkie weighed as much as a cinderblock and had the range of about three and a half feet, but you could totally hear your friend talking to you…. from a distance… WITHOUT WIRES. A Banana-talkie would have been even cooler than the dull grey and black ones that I grew up with. Even if you didn’t have a friend around, you could always do the most exciting thing ever… practice your Morse code, because almost every walkie-talkie given to a kid had a Morse code key just in case you ever were stuck on the Titanic.

Compasses are also intriguing to kids for some bizarre reason. Again, I’m not sure if kids today care about them, but I always thought a compass was incredibly interesting, at least until I learned how they worked in science class. I think perhaps things would have been different if I had grown up with a banana-compass, though. I’d probably gone on to join the lucrative business of fighting Predators.

Now days things are different. Hell, we all know though that modern technology has rendered the banana-talkie and the banana-compass obsolete with the Banana Phone:

Have fun trying to get it out of your head, suckers!
