Toy Ads that Time Forgot: Secret Wars Redux!

It’s been awhile since the last Toy Ads that Time Forgot and even longer since I had a comic book ad as some fodder, but no longer! I made a trip to my local comic book shop (Treasure Island Comics), dug through the quarter back issue boxes, and came up with a few issues of comics that contained several good toy ads in them. To reward you for waiting so long for a new TAtTF, I’ve included not one, but two ads in this update. Here’s the first:

Remember when it was acceptable to have an illustrated image in a comic book instead of a picture of the real deal? You could never get away with that now. This ad, of course, is for some Secret Wars action figures. If you have no idea what Secret Wars was or don’t have any clue what the toy line was like, be sure to check out the previous TAtTF post that went into these details (it also includes my favorite image based joke on this site ever that nobody noticed… sigh). Regardless, this ad is great because even though most of the figures are drawn much like the toys appear, Wolverine has decided to ride Dr. Octopus like he’s a cowboy breaking a wild bull.

I don’t know what’s more sad in this advertisement, that you couldn’t get an X-Men pennant to safe your life today or that weird ass toy that promises Captain America’s flying shelf AND Spider-Man’s web thrower. I’d have to go with the later as I’m betting it is one of the most disappointing toys of our generation. Call it a hunch, but I don’t think that two awesome promises could be fulfilled with one five dollar toy found in a comic book ad.

Remember the good old days when Doc Ock and Dr. Doom were the most formidable bad guys in the Marvel U? Now Dr. Doom is teaming up with the heroes during every other crisis to deal with New and Improved Threats.

    Sigh, the good ol’ days.

  3. Paul Says:

Yeah, Doc Ock is neutered for sure now. Didn’t Doom shed a tear during 911? Yuck.

  4. Savage Says:

Everyone has got their own shield?!?

  5. Paul Says:

Yeah Savage, click on the link in the post that takes you back to the first Secret Wars post. It explains the shields via the comic book ad there.
