Toy Ads That Time Hasn’t Forgotten… Yet
With the world being in Batman fever, I’ve had a disturbing lack of Batman related posts. I plan on rectifying this immediately. There are a couple of ads that Mattel has put out recently cashing in on Batman: The Dark Knight with some good old role play accessories.
If I were a kid, I’d be insane-o over those bat wings. Talk about cool, they kick the crap out of other movie related role play accessories like Hulk Hands (and even worse, Thing Hands). Still, I find these ads a tad disturbing in a few different ways. The first and most important is the Heath Ledger Joker cutout. It gives me the “it’s way too soon” creeps.
Issue number two is the fact that the kid in the ad shouldn’t be allowed to see The Dark Knight. I just have the feeling that if there were any boobs in the film it would have been rated R for sure, yet there’s all kinds of crazy violence and a super dark tone and it gets a PG-13. You could argue that the toys are for Batman in general, but you know a lot of parents are doing to be dumb and bring their kids to see it.
Issue three is the Nerf gun. When the hell does Batman ever use a gun? At least when I was a kid I had a suction cup gun that looked like his grapple gun from the ‘89 movie. You remember the grapple gun right? The thing that Batman used to stop himself from falling uncontrollably for fifty stories and crashing on top of a car with his girlfriend in his arms without magically killing either of them? Yeah, that grapple gun.

Hey, kids! You too can drop mobsters from rooftops and break their legs!
