Toy Hunt: A Sweet Sky Commanders Find

Lately, I’ve been trying to stop at more rummage and garage sales in order to see if I could find any cool toys. I normally don’t do this, because I figure that almost anything good has been long gone and the only things that I’ll find are junk and Power Rangers (which I guess they’re both the same thing if you think about it). Lately though, I’ve decided to roll the dice despite the fact I figure I won’t find anything. That’s why I was totally blown away when I found this (click to make bigger):
This is a Sky Commanders Outrider with Commander Rex Kling and I only paid a whole two bucks for the thing. If you’re not familiar with the Sky Commanders, they were a neat line from Kenner that had the gimmick that the figures and vehicles could travel around on strings. It’s a strange concept, for sure, but one that I liked when I was a young lad.
While the box of the Outrider is fairly boned, it’s still fairly intact. The Outrider is nearly complete and is only missing a couple of missiles. There’s also no stickers nor is there a sticker sheet, so I’m guessing that whoever had this never put them and just happened to lose the stickers at some point. What I did like was that the instructions were included as well as the insert advertising the rest of the toys. I seriously love these little toy brocures. It’s one of the non-toy, toy related bits I’ve started collecting recently.
By the way, I’m truly eating up your sweet jealousy at my awesome find.

That’s a really awesome find! I have a couple of old Sky Commanders somewhere back at my parents’ house, one was some red pogo like thing with a string, the other had a long blue… ribbon I guess that it could move along. Those were a lot of fun when I was little, but weren’t the best toys if my attention span was limited because they required some setup and take down time, and had to find a place to put them, usually strung up between chairs and/or a doorknob.

Wow!! That is an awesome find. Amazing that they still had the box too. All I have left from my Sky Commanders is some instructions and inserts.

I was totally into Sky Commanders for a while as a kid. They’re probably in my mom’s attic, with the lines in impossibly tangled knots, which I recall as their natural state. They were neat toys in their day, though.

I occasionally stop at garage sales, and this is the kind of thing I’m always hoping to find. Sadly, I only seem to run across the aforementioned junk and Power Rangers. I didn’t have any SKy Commanders when I was a kid, but I do remember them.
I love those old toy brochures, too. I still have a stack of ‘em from Hasbro and Mattel, and I believe a couple of Kenner ones, too.
