Wizkids is Gone
It’s hard to believe, but the company responsible for collectible table top games like Heroclix is gone. I know that this little bit of news hit this week and I realize that many of you probably had seen it already, I just wanted to put in my two cents.
I was at one time obsessed with Heroclix. I have a giant tackle box filled with the figures and if the corruption of an item used for something manly like fishing should give you an insight into my character. What I liked about Heroclix was that it was a simplified form of table top combat involving my favorite superheroes. I didn’t want to get knee deep into role playing game mechanics, I just had to know a few simple rules and I was off. I was so into these things that if this blog was started a few years ago, you would have seen a lot of Heroclix coverage… maybe way too much.
There were a couple of things that helped to stop my obsession was the sheer pain of having to drop so much money on packs of figures only to end up with an endless amount of lame characters and doubles. I also had only one or two friends that would play with me and to me these games are more fun when you can play with a variety of people. I know I could have probably sought out other players and game shops and the like, but seriously I’m not that nerdy.
It’s a major shame that Wizkids is gone, because I’d always thought I’d get back into these games. Horrorclix and the Haloclix where two subsets that called out to me to play, but somehow I never did. I didn’t entirely avoid their call, I bought a Warthog and at least one pack of figures for Halo, but that was it. The Topps Company has said that they will, “…immediately pursue strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without noticeable disruption.” Meaning that Heroclix might have some hope of continuing, but you can say goodbye to any sub-line that wasn’t making money hand over fist. The Halo Scarab will perhaps be the crowning achievement of Wizkids and something that will probably never be topped in that sort of line.

I too was once a huge fan of the Clix. I really don’t know why I stopped collecting them, but for whatever reason I did. I always intended to get back into them, but now…well, sadness.

By the way Paul, have you ever seen the Horror Clix Cthulhu? That is one most excellent game piece.
